Reduce Sun Exposure
According to the Mayo Clinic, the most important factor in keeping your skin healthy is to reduce or avoid direct exposure to the sun's harsh rays. Ultraviolet rays damage the skin's natural sebaceous oil production, increasing your risk of wrinkles, blotchy skin and even skin cancer. Use a broad-spectrum sun block on your skin before going outdoors and reapply it every 2 hours. Wear a large-brimmed hat, long sleeves and long pants for additional skin protection.
Stay Hydrated
Your skin needs sufficient water to remain plump and healthy but that's not the only benefit your skin derives from drinking plenty of pure water. Water assists in flushing toxins from your system and aids in the healthy function of your skin's oil glands. Six 8-oz. glasses of water each day is sufficient for most people, but if you perspire a lot, increase that amount. In addition, avoid excess caffeinated drinks and alcoholic drinks, both of which have a dehydrating effect on the body.
Eat a Healthy Diet
You know that eating a healthy diet helps prevent illness, but it also helps keep your skin looking good. A diet that includes plenty of dark leafy greens and orange vegetables provides ample vitamin D and vitamin E, both vital to skin health. Zinc is another nutrient necessary for healthy skin and you can ensure that you get enough by including dairy products, such as yogurt, aged cheeses and milk or lean poultry or pork in your diet. If you don't get enough of these nutrients in your diet, consider taking a daily multivitamin.
Clean and Then Moisturize
Your skin will not absorb the moisturizer you apply in the morning, but it will benefit by reducing moisture loss during the day. To get the most from your moisturizer, apply it immediately after cleaning your face. Wash with a gentle cleanser and rinse thoroughly before patting your skin nearly dry. Slather moisturizer on still-damp skin. For all-over skin moisturizing, apply body oil to your skin after your shower while you are still wet, massaging it into the skin before patting dry. Your skin won't be greasy, just soft and smooth.
